Attributing overall decay in social character to incidents like gangrape, Samajwadi Party national general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav has said that Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit is indulging in politics by blaming the police for lapses in view of the Assembly elections next year.
Mr Yadav said that the impact of Western culture has hastened the social decay, as “cheerharan” of hundreds of girls are watched by “Dhritrashtras” on New Year eve celebrations.
“The police alone cannot be blamed. The society has to take the blame. Jis tarah se samaj ke charitra ka hanan hua hai usse bhi aisi ghatnaen ho rahi hain (such incidents are also taking place due to massive decay in the social character),” said Mr Yadav, while stressing that the people very conveniently overlook when hundreds of girls are molested and become target of eve-teasing during New Year celebrations.
On the blamegame between the Sheila Dikshit-led Delhi government and the city police, Mr Yadav said that there is an internal politics going on within the Congress with an eye on next year’s Assembly polls in the national capital.
“The people in Delhi who originally hail from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar think that the police is under state government. So, Ms Dikshit is trying to tell these people, who constitute more than half of Delhi’s electorate, that she does not have control over the police, which actually is under the Union home ministry,” said Mr Yadav. He also found no merit in the demands of a special session of the Parliament to pass a tough law for rape cases.
“The law is already tough. Just few days back a court in UP gave capital punishment in a rape case. But the society has to take tough steps. They have to inform the police about anti-social elements,” said Mr Yadav.
He added that “had I been the police commissioner of Delhi I would have suspended all police personnel on all pickets on the route taken by the bus in which the gangrape was committed”. He said that the police must enforce night policing.
