It has come to light that the non-delivery of foreign medical journals from foreign countries had cost the BMC a loss of `96,000 between the year 1998 and 2001. However, the civic body has decided to forfeit the amount as it feels contesting court cases in foreign land for recovery would be far more expensive. The proposal to forfeit the amount will be tabled before the civic standing committee for approval on Friday.
According to the civic officials, the BMC procures leading foreign medical journals. It had spent `96,000 to buy these journals from their foreign publishers. However, as the publishers failed to supply them on time, the amount has gone down the drain.
“During the three years from 1998 to 2001, the Kasturaba Hospital library did not receive some of the journals. Several letters by the BMC to these publishers met with no response. Even attem-pts to recover the amount failed,” said a senior civic official.
To avoid loss, the BMC since 2003 has started procuring these foreign journals from the Indian distributors. “This system has help-ed us in cases of non-supply as distributors refund the amount to us,” the official said.

CM ensures patil gets rs seat unopposed

The CM on Wednesday added another feather to his cap by ensuring unopposed election of Rajni Patil to the Rajya Sabha. Ms Patil is set to get elected unopposed as the Opposition Shiv Sena-BJP is not fielding anybody. A senior Congress leader informed that Mr Chavan had a dialogue with the Opposition leaders and convinced them against putting up a candidate against Ms Patil. “The CM also ensured that all top NCP leaders were present when Ms Patil filed her nomination,” he said. Interestingly, NCP chief Sharad Pawar had hinted on rethinking over the alliance with the Congress only a couple of days ago. Despite that, NCP leaders were present when Ms Patil filed her nomination.
Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Eknath Khadse (BJP) and Sena leader in the lower house Subhash Desai said the CM had requested them not to field a candidate as the seat was earlier represented by Vilasrao Deshmukh.
