[1]Following the Munirka gangrape case and a growing security fear among city women, the hostelites and PG dwellers are finding themselves facing stricter rules now. From early deadlines, more security guards to application slips for night-outs, a lot many measures are being taken that are also drawing flak from students.
Needa Falak, who lives in Jamia Millia Islamia University hostel, says that the authorities have put up helpline number lists all over the hostel. “Also, there is a shortcut passage to the college from the hostel. It has been blocked for security reasons and we have been warned against using it. All this is for our security, but we are asked too many questions and are constantly under surveillance. It gets uncomfortable at times,” says Needa.
Indraprastha College for Women (ICW) has preponed its girls’ hostel deadline to 9.30pm from 10.30pm. Niharika Jain, a student from ICW, says that they have to submit approved permission slips for night-outs. “We have to give our attendance every night around 9pm to ensure all the girls are in their rooms and have not sneaked out,” says Niharika.
While college hostels are taking security measures, city PG accommodations are being as careful. Sunita Saxena, who lives in a PG in Hari Nagar, says that their landlord now have 8pm deadline as against the previous 10pm. “My landlord is also planning to install CCTV cameras. We have to inform them before stepping out even in the evening. If anyone fails to inform they call our parents back home,” says Sunita.
