In yet another embarrassment for the Mamata Banerjee government, the Calcutta high court on Wednesday ordered the superintendent of police (SP) of Murshidabad to probe the complaint of a person Santu Sinha against the state animal husbandry minister and Trinamul Congress candidate for Rejinagar Assembly bypoll Humayun Kabir and submit a report by February 19.
The petitioner, Mr Sinha is the accounts manager in a company Aroma Enterprises. His lawyer Rabiul Islam said that Justice Dipankar Dutta also asked the SP to ensure Mr Sinha’s security.
In his petition, Mr Sinha alleged that Mr Kabir had threatened him over the phone on December 23. His lawyer submitted a CD of the telephonic conversation and the call list details. “Honourable judge asked the district SP to listen to the recording of the conversation between the petitioner and the accused and submit a report on the next date of hearing,” Mr Islam said.
Mr Kabir had won the Rejinagar seat as a Congress candidate. However, a few months ago, he quit Congress and joined the Trinamul Congress and was made a minister by the chief minister as reward for deserting Congress.
Mr Kabir said he was repentant and had full faith in the judiciary.
