Style czars turn street stars

A well-dressed guy with a neat, trimmed hair is cynosure of all eyes. However, a recent photograph of Ashton Kutcher shooting for his film on Steve Jobs, shows him sporting a casual, hippie look, with a long beard, unkempt hair, a short kurta and pyjama.
Actor Sean Penn, who is known for his crop of well-maintained hair, was spotted in Malibu, sporting a greasy ponytail stuck into his cap. International fashionistas are divided on the verdict for the latter. But the look straight off the streets, seems to be catching up big time.
“For a guy to carry off the careless, street look requires a lot of confidence. He should be comfortable in his shoes. In Bollywood, the style of the hero is completely character driven and the actors seldom have a particular style of their own. If required, Ranbir Kapoor, might be someone, who should carry off the street look well,” says designer, Rajvi-Mohan Singh. There is also diversity across the globe, when it comes to street fashion. “For a guy in LA, the fashion from the street would have a different context, than a guy from Mumbai,” she adds.
Back-brushed, gelled hair has become a staple on ramps. The hippie look gives designers a lot to experiment with. “The idea of grunge has not been explored much in the past. Street style has a lot more potential and scope to experiment. Be it in terms of clothes, look or even the attitude. It is great that the younger generation of designers are taking the street look on the ramps,” says designer, Rahul Khanna.
“Hippie is freedom from conventional. There is certain wilderness to it. A long mane carelessly pony tailed or thrown open can be carried by very few Indian actors. Hrithik Roshan and Imraan Khan would be great options, to try out this look on and off-screen,” says celebrity hair stylist, Salvio John Periera.
At the end of the day, fashion is all about personality and confidence. “Whether you are wearing something from a second hand shop, carrying out a ruffian look or a wearing a lovely Valentino gown, you will still end up looking like a slob, if you aren’t sure about yourself. The street look is definitely here to stay for a while. The newer generation of Bollywood actors has tones of confidence to carry the look. One actor who I think carries it off real well would be Ranveer Singh. So far his style is pretty casual yet fashionable, without looking like a hobo,” concludes Kevin Marak, stylist and fashion entrepreneur.
