Chennai: Claiming that the hike in the rail fare is akin to “rubbing salt into the wounds” of the people already reeling under the impact of inflation and spiraling prices of commodities, chief minister J. Jayalalithaa has demanded its immediate roll back.
The AIADMK supremo said the hike would be a “big burden on the poor and hurt the common man… At a time when the people are hit hard by the rising prices, high inflation and hike in kerosene, petrol, diesel and LPG prices, the increase in passenger fares ahead of the railway budget is akin to rubbing salt into the wound.”
“I demand that the Congress-led UPA, in which the DMK is an ally, should roll back the increase immediately,” said her statement.
“We do not support such hike,” was DMK chief M. Karunanidhi’s cryptic reply when reporters sought his response.
