Kajol keeps up with changing times

Kajol was at her charming and effervescent best at the Ficci Frames convention that concluded recently. With buddy Karan Johar engaging her in a freewheeling conversation, the actress said that she believes she is still the best actress in recent times.

“I think actors learn, un-learn, refine and evolve in the process of acting. So far, I think I’m the best,” she articulates.
The actress also mentions how she wouldn’t mind doing a film like Kahaani if she were to share a good rapport with the director. “I would have taken up Kahaani if the director would have sold the film to me. I believe a director can just turn things around for a film. Even a mediocre film can shine if it’s in the hands of a good director,” she says adding that she wouldn’t attempt a film like The Dirty Picture though. “I don’t think I would have done justice to that role.”
Despite having worked with some big banners and production houses, Kajol’s critics have one complaint against the actress — that she does not experiment and look at out-of-the-box cinema. “To be honest, I don’t like most scripts that come to me. All of them have these dark, edgy characters. I don’t mind slightly uncomfortable characters, but I don’t like the dark roles. I do what makes me happy and I’ve been fortunate enough to have that choice,” she says adding that she wouldn’t want to do item numbers either.
Of late, the actress has been spotted making an evolved style statement at public appearances. For someone like her who hardly paid attention to her looks and style, Kajol has become style-conscious for most fashion police. So what really triggered that change? “I agree that I’ve become more aware of my looks and style. And I’ve really worked hard for this change. Times are changing and one needs to keep up with them. But the one person I credit for this change is Karan. He created a brand out of himself and I realised that it had to be my conscious decision to change my attitude,” she says.
Kajol says that she is happy about her body of work and believes she has delivered her 100 per cent in front of the camera. When asked where she sees herself a decade down the line she says, “I don’t know what I would do ten years down the line. Maybe just have another baby. I certainly don’t want to become a director, but I would love to become an author and write a book,” she says.
Considering the illustrious lineage the actress has, she says she sees glimpses of her father in her while narrating stories to her kids and having fun with them. “I think I see a lot of my mum in me when I discipline my children. And sometimes I see glimpses of my aunt Nutan. But that’s that about my lineage,” she says.
