Wastage in times of drought?

Television channel Colors shot a Holi special at Kamalistan studio on Sunday for which over 12 tankers of water were ordered. The use of precious water for rain dances at a time when parts of the state are facing the worst drought in decades has drawn criticism from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), which said it would take up the issue with the government.

where the shoot was taking place on Sunday confirmed that he had been contracted to supply 12 tankers with the capacity of 10,000 to 20,000 litres each. “I supplied 12 tankers for the event, but there are other contractors too,” said Shanawaz, one of the water suppliers. At least two other water suppliers — Yadav Road Transport and Chaurasiya Water Suppliers were present at the location and provided additional tankers.
According to one of the hands coordinating the transfer of water from the water tankers into makeshift tanks made behind the set where the shooting was taking place, about 25 tankers of well water had been ordered for the event.
The water from the tankers was being used for a rain dance and for dunking actors and actresses in water tubs made for the same purpose. On hearing about the channel’s wastefulness, Akhil Chitre, executive member of the MNS said, “It is
unfortunate that the channel has not acted responsibly and have wasted such a vital resource especially at a time when the state is reeling under a drought.”
Mr Chitre added that the party seniors would take up the issue with the government to ensure that such extravagance is curtailed.
The channel’s public relations said they would revert to this newspaper on the issue, but did not do so.
