‘More a friend than strict dad’

Anil Kapoor insists that he is more of a friend than an overprotective father to his daughters Sonam and Rhea. “We’re not a conservative family and I’m not strict with my children,” smiled Anil when we quizzed him about the general perception that he disapproves of Sonam’s relationship with on again-off again beau Puneet Malhotra.

“My mother-in-law always said we should be thankful that our children are attracted to the opposite sex!” winks Anil, before adding somberly, “I have never ever had a problem with Sonam’s choice of men.”
Anil says rather than laying down the law, he prefers to have mature and practical conversations with his daughters. “If I don’t like the men they are dating, I won’t mince any words. I’ll tell them that the guy’s totally s***! But if they are with someone who’s very sensible, then I wouldn’t object to it,” Anil says.
The veteran actor also denies that he has any role to play in the fizzling out of the Sonam-Puneet relationship. “I let my family take their own decisions because I’m confident that they’re sensible and pragmatic in their approach,” he says.
Hmm… we can think of at least one Bollywood father who would perhaps do well to share Anil’s sentiments.
