[1]Chennai: Is Facebook too tough a temptation to resist? At least that is how Indian Railways feels! Taking a cue from a few other railway zones, Southern Railway (SR) has joined the list of government organisations that have opened FB account to boost its image and connect with its patrons, the people. The official FB page of SR is already abuzz with hundreds of netizens liking it and making suggestions to the railways.
In less than a week, SR’s FB page has recorded 373 likes. Dozens of FB members, irrespective of age, have extended their unequivocal support by welcoming SR. Suggestions have poured in with lots of members seeking stoppage of trains, publication of time table in the FB page and even wanting to know details of the launch of trains announced in the budget.
However, the railways, which described it as an official page that would inform public about useful new activities of railways and disseminate social messages to people, has specifically advised netizens not to use the FB page for grievance redressal.
A senior SR official, confirming that SR had joined FB, said the page was launched on instructions of the Railway Board. From announcements on new trains to change in service pattern and special trains, the FB page will furnish all useful and new information to the people about SR, the official said. Besides networking, the FB page will help the department get instant public feedback on any new idea, said another SR bureaucrat.
The Election Commission, police and Chennai metro rail are a few other popular public undertakings to join the social networking site.
