The government is not just planning a stringent law against match-fixing to clear the existing mess in the cricketing world but will also be tightening the screws on the BCCI in an attempt to make the cricket board more accountable.
Highly-placed sources said there was a growing view within government that the BCCI has virtually no accountability, particularly towards the government or any of its agencies. Now that the BCCI finds itself in an extremely tight spot, the government wants to use the opportunity to rein in the board. Sources said while the government wants to let the BCCI enjoy “functional and financial autonomy”, it will have to be accountable to the government and for this stringent provisions will be made in the proposed Sports Bill.
Meanwhile, political pressure started moun-ting on BCCI chief N. Srinivasan with the NCP on Friday dema-nding that he should step down immediately. The BCCI has till now been strongly resi-sting any move by the government to exercise some control over it.
