The government, sources said, will seek legal opinion on whether or not the IPL should be discontinued.
Voices are being raised within the political spectrum that the IPL should be stopped immediately as it has become a major centre for match-fixing and spot-fixing. If the IPL does continue, the government is keen to de-link it from the BCCI so as to keep the board insulated from the adverse activities and criticism that the IPL is facing.
NCP spokesman D.P. Tripathi said Mr Srinivasan should resign with immediate effect now that the name of his son-in-law has been dragged into the spot fixing investigation.
Sources said voices of dissent were bring raised within the board where an influential section is of the view that Mr Srinivasan should step down on the issue of morality.
“Mr Srinivasan’s position is becoming untenable by the day. He should resign till his son-in-law’s name is cleared. The government is keeping a close watch on the proceedings and will intervene at an appropriate time,” a senior government functionary said.
Meanwhile, IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla and BCCI vice-president Arun Jaitley met Union law minister Kapil Sibal to discuss a strong law against match-fixing. Sources said Mr Sibal is believed to have implied to the two cricket administrators that it was imperative to clean up the existing mess and have strong regulation of BCCI activities.
The BCCI till now has been strongly resisting any move by the government to exercise some control over it.
The board has strongly opposed moves to bring it under the RTI Act on the grounds that it took no financial assistance from the government.
