Starting next academic year, the University of Mumbai will have a monthly students’ darbar or students’ grievance redressal meeting where students will be able to address their grievances to the concerned authorities and get their issues resolved. The decision by the University will come into force after the Department of Students Welfare (DSW) submits its feasibility and functionality report.
According to some student activists, due to the lack of an open and transparent platform for the students to air their grievances so far, their complaints either went unheeded or unattended, as there was no accountability for the people involved in addressing the complaints.
One student activist said that the only way to get the student’s grievances addressed immediately was to have the authorities attend student darbars.
The demand was put up by the activists in front of Dr Rajan Welukar, vice-chancellor and Dr Naresh Chandra, pro-vice-chancellor of MU.
“We have already forwarded the demand to the DSW and have asked them to submit a functionality report,” said Dr Chandra.

Audit finds cold-mix tech effective: bmc

The cold-mix technology adopted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for pothole filling has been found to be effective, said the third party audit carried out by the civic body. Of the 1,399 potholes audited in the western suburbs, only 13 per cent potholes were found damaged.
Last year the BMC started using the cold-mix technology to fill potholes instead of hot-mix material. In a bid to check the efficiency of this new technology, the civic body had decided to audit of 20 per cent of potholes that were filled last year.
The audit was carried out by SGS in nine wards from Bandra to Dahisar. According to the audit, of 1,399 potholes repaired with the help of cold-mix technology, defects have been found only in 194 samples. “We are happy with the performance of cold mix technologies as they have proved to be useful even during monsoons,” said a senior civic official.
