While the heavy showers have already riddled the city roads with potholes, as many as three roads caved-in at various places in the city on Thursday.
The first cave-in of this monsoon took place at Wadacha Naka in Lower Parel. The road made up of paver blocks near Deepak Talkies caved in at around 7 am, creating six-feet wide and eight-feet deep crater. Following the complaint of locals, the G-South ward officials immediately put up barricades around it and started repair works. Traffic was not affected much as the road was one-way, said civic officials.
According to the residents, the road caved-in due to poor quality paver blocks works carried out by the contractor. However, civic officials said work is on to find out the cause of the cave-in.
The Tansa East West main, as well as the sewage line were running under the road. Leakage from one of these mains would have led to erosion of soil, due to which road caved in, they said.
Kishor Ubale, assistant commissioner of G-South ward said, “The repair work is on and expected to be completed by Friday. The cause of cave-in will be known only after the work is completed.”
The second road cave-in took place at Kandivali in Mahavir Nagar at around 1.40 pm and created nine-inch cavity on the 90-feet road. The cave-in was the result of possible leakage in the underground storm water drain, said civic officials.
At Dadar, the Senapati Bapat Marg opposite BMC pumping house caved in at around 5.29 pm. The 10-inch crater, however, did not affect the traffic flow as it was near the pavement.
Sharad Ughade, assistant commissioner of G-North office said, “The repair work has been undertaken by the road department. They have installed barricades around the crater. But the exact cause of cave-in would be known by Friday after investigation.”
