Rajahmundry: In one of the biggest heists of its kind, a gang of robbers made off with nearly Rs 7.31 crore in cash after killing a man who was overseeing transfer of money to ATMs. The incident was marked by stunning lack of security, and smacked of an insider job.
Pouroju Srinivas, a local incharge of a New Delhi-based organisation, Scientific Security Management Services (SSMS), was found dead at the cash store on Monday morning. The cash, in denominations of Rs 1,000, Rs 500 and Rs 100, were found missing.
According to Urban SP T. Ravi Kumar Murthy, SSMS has the sub-contract to replenish ATMs (automated teller machines) belonging to the State Bank of India at 10 places in the state, including Rajahmundry.
The agency’s local office is located at RV Nagar near the Government Arts College. The agency collects money from the SBI main branch at Kambhala Tank and replenishes ATMs in the city daily.

Hyderabad: It was cold-blooded murder, even if he didn’t wield the knife himself. Amer Mohammed Jamal, 29, a techie working at an IT firm located in Madhapur, and a resident of Venkataramana colony in Khairatabad, got his 28-year-old wife Shereen murdered with the help of his childhood friend. The couple were having frequent disputes.
Amer told police he was often pressurised by Shereen to get rid of his father, an idea he was opposed to. After repeatedly being asked to do so, Amer thought of a plan to eliminate his wife instead as he thought that would solve his problems. He confided in his childhood friend Sudhamsh Netha, alias Sunny, who agreed to murder Shereen for a sum of Rs 30,000.
Amer instructed Sunny to murder Shereen and also steal cash and valuables to make it look like a robbery. Sunny tried to break into the flat but on noticing that Shereen was awake and alert, slipped away.
Amer then gave Sunny a duplicate key to his flat. On Friday morning, Amer slipped some sleeping pills in his wife’s tea before leaving for work. “Sunny entered the house, which was on the third floor, opened the door with the key he had been given and found her in her bedroom fast asleep.
He picked up a sharp knife from the kitchen and stabbed her. He escaped from the scene after pilfering the cash and gold ornaments in the cupboard,” Sudheer Babu, DCP West Zone, said.Both Amer and Sunny confessed to their crime, police said. The knife, gold ornaments and clothes with blood stains were recovered from Amer.

Hyderabad: A 30-year-old married woman was allegedly gang raped by three persons near the National Research Centre for Sorghum at Rajendra Nagar.
Though the incident occurred on Sunday evening, she lodged a complaint with the police on Monday. Rajendranagar police has filed a case and is investigating.

Vijayawada: Students of KBN College boycotted classes and staged protests on Monday demanding that no student should be suspended and calling for the suspension of a faculty member of the college. The protest came in the wake of a student committing suicide after being suspended from the college and being ill-treated by the faculty. His body was found on Sunday.
The students alleged that D. Santosh Kumar, 19, a second year student of B.Sc electronics committed suicide on Saturday after T. Sirisha, a faculty member of the department of electronics, chided him in front of other students and warned him not to send messages to a classmate.
II-Town inspector P. Venkateswarulu said that a girl student had complained to the college’s disciplinary committee that Santosh Kumar was constantly sending her love messages and disturbing her on Facebook.
Warning him not to send any more such messages, the teacher, Ms Sirisha, also slapped Santosh Kumar. He was suspended from college and scolded by his parents. He committed suicide by jumping into the Krishna river on Saturday night.
KBN College principal P. Krishna Murthy said that the teacher has been suspended and the college’s disciplinary committee has ordered an inquiry. He said the teacher unintentionally slapped Santosh Kumar in the course of an argument about the messages he was harassing the girl with.
Krishna Murthy told this newspaper that the college's disciplinary committee had suspended Santosh Kumar immediately after receiving the complaint from the girl. He had summoned the parents of the boy in the evening.
He counselled both the student and his father and told them that in order to protect Santosh Kumar’s future, he was merely being suspended and no police complaint was being filed. The principal said he thought Santosh Kumar would realise and rectify his mistake.

Hyderabad: CID officials arrested a Nigerian national in connection with lottery fraud. The accused, Chris Uche Johnson aka Richard Campbell and two other persons had extracted Rs 36.6 lakh from a Warangal native, saying that he had won a lottery of £5,00,000.
The CID arrested the accused in Delhi after three years of investigation. Officials had already arrested one other Nigerian national Ude Ernest Erochukwu in connection with the same case in November 2011.
Yet another accused Chimdiadi Njoku is absconding, CID officials said. The trio had lured the victim, sending him an email stating that he had won a lottery, and convinced him that he had to pay money for processing charges and customs duty to claim the lottery reward.
CID inspector P. Ravi Kumar said that the CID filed the case in June 2010 and arrested one accused the next year. Two others had been absconding since then. The CID seized Johnson’s passport and two mobile phones, and he was remanded to judicial custody.

Hyderabad: In a suicide bid, a 28-year-old woman set herself and her two children on fire at Ibrahimbagh near Golkonda in the wee hours of Monday. While the woman, K. Padmavathi, died on the spot, her two kids managed to survive, and are admitted to hospital with serious burns.
Police suspects that family disputes led to the suicide. On Sunday night, Padmavathi poured kerosene on her sleeping kids Ambika, 10, and Sidharth, 8 and doused herself and set herself on fire along with her kids at around 2.30 am, police said.
As the children screamed and ran out of the house, neighbours rushed to their rescue and put off the flames. They soon called an ambulance and informed the cops. However, Padmavathi received 90 per cent burns and died on the spot.
The children were rushed to Osmania Hospital and are critical, police said. Golkonda SI Brahmachari said, “Padmavathi had frequent disputes with her estranged husband Narsing Rao, who is a labourer. She was under a severe financial crisis as she was raising the kids alone.”

Karimnagar: Two persons were arrested on charges of collecting huge amounts of money from youth, assuring to get them employment in KDCC Bank.
Speaking to media persons here on Monday, Karimnagar DSP P. Ravinder said that Bakam Raju, 26, of Satpthagiri Colony in Karimnagar town and Pogula Srinivas of Gandhinagar in Godavarikhani town collected Rs 5.50 lakh from youth, assuring them of providing employment in KDCC Bank and gave appointment letters to nine persons.
When the youth met officials of KDCC Bank with appointment letters given, they found them to be fake. One of the victim, Dasari Sai Kiran, lodged a complaint with II Town police station following which police arrested Raju and Srinivas and seized a car, laptop, motorcycle from them, the DSP said. Two Town inspector G. Vijaykumar, SI Rafiq and others were present.
