Manipal: Rape confirmed, no arrests yet

Udupi: The medical report by Kasturba Medical College Hospital (KMC) in Manipal has confirmed that the 22-year-old MBBS student who was abducted in an autorickshaw by three men from the university campus on June 21, was indeed, raped, said Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Pratap Reddy.   
 
However no arrests have been since the rape five days ago. 
 
Sources close to the investigation are now saying that even if there is an off chance of an arrest being made after a sketch of the rapist was relea­sed by police, the FIR is weak as it only stat­es that the young wom­an was ‘sexually assaulted” and not raped.
 
Despite repeated requests from police, the rape victim and her parents have refused to file a fresh FIR, and have taken the police to task for doing so in the first place. Reddy admitted to the difficulty in persuading the family to file an FIR, citing rape. He also said that the police had not yet been able to extract fresh information about the incident from the victim.
 
The only link between the victim and the police is Kundapur DySP Yashoda. Reddy said police are working on some of the leads they had during their investigation and were hopeful of nabbing the accused soon. Police have questioned about 70 people till now, most of them autorickshaw drivers.  
 
Reddy said Manipal University has announced an additional Rs three lakh reward for anyone giving information leading to the arrest of the three culprits. Police has already announced a reward of Rs two lakh on Tuesday.

 
CM promises quick action
 

New Delhi: Under attack for failing to nab the culprits in the Manipal rape incident, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesdaysought to calm frayed nerves saying those involved in the crime would be arrested soon.
 
“Within two, three days, I hope we would be able to trace the accused. We are making all efforts to nab the accused. Ten police teams have been formed to hunt for culprits who abducted and raped the girl,” he told reporters here.
 
The chief minister termed as “brave” the 22-year-old medical student studying at Manipal near Udipi. The medical student was abducted by three people from the Manipal University campus while she was returning to her room from the library and gangraped late night on Thursday.
 
“The victim is a brave girl. She jumped from the auto-rickshaw and her leg is fractured,” Siddara­m­aiah said.
