Home minister R.R. Patil on Friday said that the state government had taken cognisance of the violence inside the premises of Taloja jail, where a prisoner attacked gangster Abu Salem. He said that the policemen guilty of negligence would be terminated from service.
In an unsuccessful attempt of murder, Salem was shot inside the Taloja jail on Thursday night by another gangster Devendra Jagtap alias JD, who is also said to be a henchman of gangster Bharat Nepali. Salem escaped, but was injured in the attack.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, the home minister said that additional DG (prison) Meera Borwankar was asked to investigate the matter. According to the preliminary report, all four policemen were found guilty and have been suspended immediately.
“This is a very serious matter. We will investigate the case in great detail. Suspension of the police officials is not enough for such kind of negligence, they will be terminated from service if proved guilty,” Mr Patil added.
This is the second incident, where a gangster was attacked inside the jail premises. In June 2012, alleged operative of the Indian Mujahideen, Qateel Siddiqui, was stabbed to death by fellow prisoners inside the Yerwada jail premises in Pune.
