Bengaluru: Birthday celebration of a 17-year-old girl turned tragic when her 18-year-old boyfriend died and she was severely injured when a speeding BMTC bus hit their motorbike near Shanthinagar flyover junction on Double Road on Wednesday morning.
The deceased, Naresh Bohra, was a second PU student at a private college in Koramangala. The injured Sanjana Bohra is a first PU student at a private college. They were relatives and their families are from Nepal. Both families have settled in the city for the last two decades and are neighbours at Mico Layout 28th Cross.
Sanjana and Naresh were heading for a movie at the multiplex in Mantri Mall in Malleswaram. Near the Shanthinagar flyover junction, the BMTC bus (KA-01-FA-2034), heading to Majestic from Attibele (Route no. 360), rammed into the motorbike. Naresh fell from the bike and the bus ran over him killing him on the spot. Sanjana escaped with injuries as she fell on the other side.
“The bus was reportedly being driven rashly and hit the bike after overtaking a four-wheeler. Naresh’s friends, Arun and Jithendra, who were following them in an autorickshaw, shifted Sanjana to a nearby hospital. Later, she was shifted to Nimhans as she had sustained grave head inuries,” the police said.
The Halasur Gate traffic police, who registered a case in connection with the accident, arrested the bus driver.

Chennai: An 18-year-old girl, working in a farmhouse in Kelambakkam in neighbouring Kancheepuram district, was found strangled to death Tuesday night. The deceased was identified as Selvanayagi, daughter of Ramaiah from Pudukottai. Kannan, who was a local handyman, has been held for the murder. Police sources said she could have been killed in a possible attempt by the man to rape her.
The incident happened in the 30-plus acre farmhouse belonging to Paneer Selvam, 55, who is running a business of landscaping star hotels and corporate buildings. His wife Suguna took care of the farmhouse, where the couple run a nursery. The coupe also rears half-a-dozen dogs, which are set free at night.
On Tuesday night, around 8 pm, Selvanayagi had gone out to feed the dogs but did not return. As she failed to show up even after 45 minutes, Suguna went out in search of her and found Selvanayagi dead in the backyard. After making initial enquiries, the police picked up a 25-year-old youth, Kannan, for enquiry.
“He was a regular visitor to the house and would do repair works. Only a known person could have entered the premises. Otherwise, the dogs could have detected the strangers. The youth, however, is claiming that he never went to the farmhouse in the night,” the police said.

Chennai: A 35-year-old, reformed history-sheeter, who was into the business of selling packaged drinking water, was hacked to death by a four-member gang in TP Chatram in front of his house on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as D. Jayaraj, who had been an active criminal till three years ago. “He was facing a few cases against him and three years ago, he decided to reform his ways and started the business of supply of packaged drinking water,” the police said.

On Wednesday afternoon, he had come out of his house after lunch when a four-member gang hacked him and escaped from the scene in a vehicle. Though the neighbours rushed Jayaraj to Kilpauk medical college, the medical team there declared him dead on arrival.
The police believe that the murder could be a result of rivalry in the water supply business.

Bengaluru: A 65-year-old director of a credit co-operative society, who was also running Urdu and English weekly magazines, was found murdered with his throat slit at his office at Idgah Complex on Tannery Road on Wednesday morning.
The deceased, Shamshulla Uda, a resident of Bamboo Bazaar, is survived by his wife. The couple has no children. He was the director of Al-quds Minorities Credit Cooperative Society Ltd and editor of Makhzan, a weekly magazine.
Both the offices are located in Idgah Complex and Uda came to the office around 7.30 am on Wednesday. The murder came to light when computer operator Jiya Khan came to the office. He found Uda lying in a pool of blood and informed his family and police.
“The assailants have slit Uda’s throat and stabbed him several times. But no one has seen the assailants entering or leaving the office. We are investigating whether any financial matters related to the society led to the murder,” the police said.
His friend Saadiq said Uda was a social activist and had led recent protests against Amanath Cooperative Bank. “He had also deposited Rs 24 lakh with Amanath and was organising protests as the bank had frozen all transactions.
He had also spoken to some ministers to direct the bank to sort out issues. We suspect that his protests against the bank led to the murder.”
He said that the assailants have broken open the safe in the magazine office and taken away cash and gold jewellery belonging to the cooperative society. The police, however, said the value of the stolen articles is yet to be known.
