[1]Thiruvananthapuram: Former IG K. Lakshmana, who was undergoing life term in the Naxal Varghese murder case, has been granted remission by the state government. Three other aged prisoners were also granted remission considering their age and health condition.
Lakshmana, who was sentenced in October 28, 2010, was suffering from various age-related problems. He is undergoing imprisonment at the Poojapura central prison. The others granted remission include Karuppuswami, 82, a Neyyatinkara native in Poojapura prison and suffering from cancer. Gopinathan, 82, and Sreedharan, 81, both natives of Kannur, are undergoing life term at the Kannur central prison.
Both of them are also suffering from old age problems, including blindness. According to an official statement, the decision was taken after considering a recommendation of DGP Prisons Alexander Jacob to grant remission to persons above 75 years and suffering from health problems.
