After a poor start to the tournament, India bounced back by cruising to a 102-run victory against West Indies at Port of Spain, Trinidad. The victory still keeps India alive in the tournament and the bonus point can turn out to be very crucial as we arrive at the business end of the tournament.
Here is a look at the five things which helped India go past Windies:
Opening Partnership: The opening stand of 123 runs between Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma gave India the platform to build a good score on. Dhawan and Sharma ensured that India got off to a good start without losing early wickets and at the same time maintain a healthy run-rate.
Imperious Kohli: Virat Kohli took full advantage of the good start and played a brilliant knock of 102 runs of 83 balls which took India well past 300. Kohli lead from the front with his knock and kept his head when India started to lose wickets in the middle overs.
Captaincy: Virat Kohli has already shown signs of improvement in his captaincy and credit should be given to him for the manner in which he marshalled his troops in the do-or-die encounter against West Indies on Friday. He is a quick learner and has particularly impressed with his bowling changes and field placements.
Pace Trio: The pace trio of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma came off really well in the match as they picked up bulk of the wickets in the West Indian innings. The pace trio shared eight wickets among themselves and also went on to show that just like batting in partnerships helps the team, bowling is no different.
Early inroads: Bhuvneshwar Kumar has this uncanny knack of picking up early wickets and he struck early against the West Indians by sending Gayle back to the pavillion. India piled on the pressure with the ball in hand by hunting in packs and the West Indian innings never really got the momentum going in the chase.
