Colleges affiliated with the University of Mumbai are miffed with the University for including their names in the list of 241 colleges that had failed to procure or renew their National Assessment and Accreditation Council (Naac) accreditation, even though they had done the needful.
Colleges alleged that the situation arose because the University had not bothered to update or verify details in the list that might have been prepared two years ago.
According to the University circular, the 241 colleges were supposed to get their accreditation done in the academic year 2013-14, failing which they might lose their recognition and approval.
Complaining about his college being included in the list, the principal of a suburban college said that their college had got the Naac accreditation done at least 18 months ago and had sent a letter to the University, informing it of the development. “The name of our college features in the list of errant colleges, which is not acceptable,” said the principal.
Justifying the circular, a University official said that many colleges had failed to inform the concerned University department of Naac accreditation being done or renewed, as a result of which the list might have featured their names.
Rubbishing the claims, the principal of another city college said that getting Naac accreditation is a huge achievement for
colleges and therefore the University’s claims are baseless. “The moment a college gets its accreditation done, it informs
all concerned authorities. If the department has
failed to update the list, why should the colleges suffer?” asked the principal.
When asked about the same, Dr Naresh Chandra, pro-vice-chancellor of MU said that he was unaware of any such controversy. “I will have to verify the same and will be able to confirm it only by Tuesday,” said Dr Chandra.
