With heaps of garbage piling across the city, corporators of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) slammed the civic administration for its failure to remove the waste. The problem has worsened considerably during the monsoons, increasing the possibility of health hazards in the city, they said.
Raising the issue in the civic general body meeting on Monday, NCP corporator Dr Saeeda Khan said, “In the absence of an effective garbage collection system by the BMC, the entire city has become a dustbin. With the capacity of dumping grounds also coming to an end, the problem has become more severe.”
Voicing the same, Samajwadi Party group leader Rais Shaikh said that there are heaps of garbage piling on in the Govandi area, due to which several people have fallen ill. Congress
corporator Suresh Koparkar said that the BMC’s garbage collection system had failed miserably.
Replying to this, additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said that the civic body is planning to offload the dumping grounds by segregating the dry and wet waste and disposing it off. She said, “The BMC has prepared an action plan of garbage collection by starting house-to-house collection by March 2014. It will be made compulsory for residents to segregate the wet and dry waste, which will be sent directly to waste recycle plants. Through this, we are planning to take about 50 per cent load off the dumping grounds by March 2015.”
