Women’s team enter quarters

Deepika Kumari and Laishram Bombayla Devi helped India finish second behind China in the recurve qualification round of the Archery World Cup Stage 3 being held in Medellin, Colombia.
According to information received here, Deepika’s seventh and Bombayla’s eighth place finishes were the best among the Indians as the men’s team were placed a lowly 14th in the recurve qualification rounds on Tuesday.
The women’s second-place finish meant that the trio, with Rimil Biruly being the third member, will directly play the quarters, taking on the winners of the match between Venezuela and Dominican Republic.
The women’s section was topped by the Olympic team silver medallist Xu Jing (1,349 points), while teammates Cheng Ming and Fang Yuting finished fourth and sixth pushing Deepika to seventh on 1,336 points.
Bombayla finished one point behind Deepika, while Rimil, overall 14th, was third best among the Indians with 1,316 points as the trio totalled 3,987 to finish a distant second behind China (4,036).
Atanu Das (1,336) with a fifth place finish was the only bright spot among the men’s as Olympians Jayanta Talukdar (1,291) and Tarundeep Rai (1,013) misfired.
Talukdar finished a lowly 22nd while Asian Games silver medallist Rai was last among the 65 qualifiers. The Indian men’s team had an overall 14th place in the qualifications with the trio’s total of 3,640 points.

World’s best to feature in India Open

Top cueists across the globe including John Higgins, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Steve Davis are expected to be feature in the £300,000 Indian Open world ranking snooker tournament, scheduled to be held in the capital from October 14.
The five-day world ranking event, to be staged in India for the first time, will see top 64 cueists battle it out for a whopping winner’s prize purse of £ 50,000 here.
The qualifier for the event, with 128 cueists, will be played in England and the top 64 players will fly down here for the prestigious meet, it was announced by the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India here on Wednesday.
The home challenge will be spearheaded by eight-time world champion Pankaj Advani and 2012 Asian snooker champion Aditya Mehta, even as India will field six wild card entries to make it a 70-player event to be played on four tables.
The event carries valuable ranking points, a top prize money and are open to all professional players, enough for stars like O’Sullivan, Judd Trump, Higgins, Mark Selby and Neil Robertson to make a dash to India.
