In a shocking case of rigid administrative policies, the BMC will be paying all service benefits to a vice-principal who was arrested for ill-treating a student in a civic school ten years ago. According to civic officials, on September 21, 2003, Khan Habiba Anwar, who was working as the vice-principal in Gayak Rafinagar Municipal Urdu School no. 1, cut the hair of a student, Rekham Sakat (14), and ridiculed her. On the basis of strong evidence, Khan was arrested by the police and also suspended from civic services.
However, as the matter reached the sessions court, Khan made a settlement with the plaintiff’s family by paying them `10,000. The court acquitted her, thereby paving the way for her reinstatement in civic services. On the basis of a court ruling, Khan applied for reinstatement.
