Most senior CBI officers, unhappy over the Centre’s move to junk its proposal for more powers for its director, feel that instead of trying to insulating it from outside influences, the government wants to create “more masters”. The CBI is likely to urge the Supreme Court to grant its plea for more autonomy in order to curb outside interference in its functioning.
Speaking to this newspaper on Sunday, CBI director Ranjit Sinha said: “It is now for the Supreme Court to take a view in the light of the observation made by it during the recent hearing in the Coalgate scam in which the agency was termed as a ‘caged parrot’ having many masters.” The CBI chief refused to say anything more on the issue.
The Supreme Court, monitoring the CBI’s investigation into Coalgate, will scrutinise the stand of both the CBI and the government on August 6.

If Iran Prez serious, we can talk: US
Washington, Aug. 4: Iran will find the United States a “willing partner” if new President Hassan Rowhani is prepared for serious talks on its nuclear programme, the White House said Sunday.
In a message congratulating Mr Rowhani, the White House said this “presents an opportunity for Iran to act quickly to resolve the international community’s deep concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme”.
In taking the oath of office in Tehran on Sunday, Mr Rowhani called on the West to engage Iran through dialogue, not sanctions.
