Vaidehi Gawkar, whose suicide attempt killed her daughter, had not blamed her husband anywhere in the suicide note despite the cause behind the extreme step being his alcohol addiction. Instead, she had instructed her husband to liquidate her fixed deposits and sell her jewellery in the note. She was also granted bail by a metropolitan magistrate court.
Gawkar was granted bail by the Mulund metropolitan magistrate court on a personal bond of `15,000. She was arrested by the Bhandup police 304-A (causing death by negligence) and 309 (attempt to commit suicide). The police did not arrest her for murder, as she had tried saving her daughter and stayed afloat with her for three hours in the lake. Interestingly, while the police concluded that the cause behind the extreme step was her husband’s compulsive alcohol addiction, Gawkar had not blamed him anywhere in the suicide note.
“She instead claimed in the note that she faced no trouble from her husband and not to blame anyone for the act. She then went on to give details about her bank two FDs and jewellery, which the family can liquidate after her death. The instructions were addressed to her husband,” said senior PI Shrirang Nadgauda. Gawkar’s husband had been coming home in a drunk state for the past five days which caused her severe emotional trauma. The police, however, denied any instance of harassment and domestic violence at her residence.
“Even her in-laws have said they don’t hold anything against her and are prepared to forget what happened. They are themselves clueless on the tragic turn of events,” Mr Nadgauda added. Gawkar lived with her daughter Devyani (4), her husband and in-laws in the Mauli Niwas Chawl at Kokan Nagar in Bhandup (west). Devyani was a kindergarten student.
On Thursday at around 3 am, she left her house after leaving behind the suicide note and headed straight to the Shivaji Talao. While she claimed that her daughter followed her into the water, the police suspects that she took Devyani with her, but changed her mind after seeing her drown.
