A school student was killed and four others were injured on Thursday in police firing in North Dinajpur district when they were protesting a court order directing occupation of a playground by its owner, the police said.
The incident occurred when hundreds of students of Srikrishnapur High School in Islampur refused to evict a plot of land, used as a playground, even as policemen went there to vacate it following a court order.
The students resisted and brick-batted the police.
The police then opened fire in which a student died on the spot, they said. The ownership of the land has long been disputed but a recent order by a local court had favoured the landlord.
