General Hospital set to get second dialysis unit

Kochi: Buoyed by the successful running of its first dialysis unit consisting of 11 machines, the General Hospital authorities are set to implement the second phase by adding another 11 dialysis machines.
Work on the building to house the second dialysis unit is now on and is expected to be completed in a month. “We expect Rs 35 lakh from National Rural Health Mission and funds from Karunya Benevolent Fund Scheme and the Rotary Club to set up the second unit,” said Dr Annie, superintendent of General Hospital.
“Each dialysis machine costs Rs  5.6 lakh and the patient operated dialysis couch for each machine costs Rs 1.3 lakh. The buil­d­ing alone costs nearly Rs 25 lakh which is being given by Ludy Louis from his MLA fund,” said Dr Resmi, RMO of the General Hospital.
The authorities thought of launching the second phase as the existing unit could cater to only nealry 22 people per day for dialysis. “We have asked them to give us a detailed project report and we are confident of giving them liberal funding,” said Dr Ajay Kumar, Rotary Dis­trict Governor. The project will take care of by Rotary Club of Cochin Global.
The first phase of the dialysis unit had cost nearly Rs 1 crore which was launched in last August by the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. “Setti­ng up of the reverse osmosis plant is one of the priorities while building the dialysis unit, since a lot of pure water is needed in dialysis unit. A total of Rs 10 lakh was needed for the previous plant and now only an extension at a cost of Rs 3 lakh is needed,” said Dr Resmi.
