In what may be called an attempt to fish in troubled water, the elusive Ulfa chief Paresh Baruah has roped in the leaders, spearheading the movement for separate Kamatapur state comprising six districts of North Bengal and 15 districts of Assam and extending their support for the demand of separate homeland.
Disclosing that security agencies have intercepted communications between Ulfa(I) chief Paresh Baruah and top leaders of the All-Assam Koch-Rajbongshi Students Union, authoritative security sources in the home ministry told this newspaper that it was an alarming development as far as statehood movements in the state are concerned.
Pointing out that Ulfa chief has not only assured the Aakrasu leaders to extend their moral support, security sources said that militant leader also committed to lent the support of their armed cadres to mount pressure on the government in Assam and West Bengal.
Admitting that Ulfa rebels may resort to violence in Western Assam, security sources said that armed rebels of outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) faction led by I K Songbijit has also stepped up its activities under shadow of separate Bodoland movement.
Informing that pro-talk faction of NDFB led by Ranjan Daimary has not submitted any list of their cadres to the security forces, sources said taking the benefit of this, the anti-talk faction of NDFB has also sent their 40-45 armed cadres in Bodoland Territorial Council areas. In absence of any list of cadres, most of armed NDFB rebels, when caught by security forces, identify themselves to be a member of pro-talk faction.
Security sources said that armed rebels of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland are also in touch with a section of leaders of People’s Joint Action Committee for Bodoland.
