The CBI on Friday filed a status report in the Supreme Court on the progress of investigation in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case in a “sealed cover” but the sources indicated that it might spell more trouble to the Narendera Modi government and even some politicians in Rajasthan.
The CBI has sought transfer of the case outside Gujarat stating that atmosphere in the state was not “conducive for fair trial” in the wake of “large politician-police nexus” emerging from the investigation, which might “go beyond” Amit Shah, who resigned as minister of state for home in the Modi government after his name figured in the agency chargesheet. Sources said the fake encounter of Sohrabuddin, an inter-state “extortionist”, has taken a drastic turn as the investigation progressed and the agency suspected that further probe “may lead” to some other political leaders both in Gujarat and Rajasthan.
Besides, the CBI has sought apex court’s permission to investigate the alleged killing of Tulsiram Prajapati, another “extortionist” and accomplice of Sohrabuddin, in another “fake encounter”.
The agency claimed that both the cases were “inter-connected” and were the part of same “transaction”.
The CBI filed the report meeting the six-month deadline fixed by the apex court in its judgement of January this year, handing over the probe to CBI after it was not satisfied with the investigation by Gujarat police Special Investigating Team, headed by senior officer Geetha Johri.
