Big fight likely on Food Bill

New Delhi: The Congress has issued a three-line whip to its members for the week starting Monday, when the Food Security Bill and other key legislative measures will come up in the Lok Sabha.The members were asked to be present in the House and support business from Monday to Friday, except Wednesday, when the Parliament will not sit due to Janmashtami.
It will be interesting to see whether the the BJP and the  SP would allow the House to transact its business in view of the tense situation in UP.
Yatra threat to Food Bill
The government will again try to push the Food Security Bill, which is still hanging due to bedlam in Parliament, on Monday, but it will be interesting to see whether the the BJP and the  Samajwadi Party would allow the House to transact its business in view of the tense situation in Uttar Pradesh over the  ‘Chaurasi Kosi Parikrama Yatra’.
While “secular parties” such as the Left, JD(U), RJD, Trinamul, DMK, BJD and Telugu Desam would try to isolate the BJP on the issue, the ruling SP in Uttar Pradesh will compel the BSP to take a firm stand against the saffron party in both the two Houses. 
In case of voting, the Bill faces a threat from AIADMK. Party supremo and Tamil Nadu CM J. Jayalalithaa in a statement on Sunday said, “Under these circumstances, the Food Security Bill with its present amendments, which is due to come up for discussion in Lok Sabha on August 28, 2013, is not acceptable. AIADMK will vote against the Bill.”
Besides the Food Bill, other major bills up for consideration include the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2011. It seeks to ensure a participatory and informed consultative, and  transparent process for land acquisition. 
The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority Bill, 2011 and the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers Rehabilitation Bill, 2012 are among others listed for consideration this week. The session has a heavy legislative agenda and there have been indications that it may be extended till September 5.
