Students from all the government-aided schools will get insurance cover very soon. The state government is considering providing insurance cover to students from Class 1 to 12. The families of these students would be eligible to get `50,000 on accidental death and upto `30,000 for serious injuries.
According to sources, the school education department has drafted this new scheme, which would be called the Rajiv Gandhi Students Accident Ex-Gratia Scheme. The idea is to provide insurance cover to all the students studying in government-run schools.
“The scheme will cover all students from Class 1 to 12. Families of the student who dies in an accident will be eligible to get a sum of `50,000 from the state government, while `30,000 will be given to those students who have suffered serious injuries,” said a senior officer on condition of anonymity.
“Students committing suicide will not be eligible for any financial help from the government. Only those students who meet with accidents will be considered,” the officer added.
The scheme is expected to be tabled before the state Cabinet on Wednesday. An initial provision of `10 crore has been proposed for the scheme. J.S. Saharia, additional chief secretary for school education, confirmed that such a scheme is in place, but refused to divulge the details.
For smooth implementation of this scheme, the department has proposed that a district level committee headed by district collectors. “The committee will be formed to take decisions after studying individual cases based on the documents submitted before them,” the officer added.
