Stirs drive students out of AP

Hyderabad: Over 90,000 out of 2.18 lakh students who had qualified in Eamcet engineering stream this year stayed away from counselling. College managements attribute this to a large number of students going to other states to pursue engineering courses due to the political turmoil in AP.
The seat allotment list will be issued on September 17.
As many as 2,18,693 students were declared as qualified in Eamcet this year and of them, only 1,30,051 students attended counselling for verification of certificates. However, only 1,26,084 gave their options regarding their preferred colleges and courses on the Web in the counselling.
Thus, seats will be allotted to only these 1.26 lakh students while around 2.20 lakh seats are on offer. Assuming that all the students who will be allotted seats take admissions, nearly 94,000 seats will still remain vacant.
Officials expect another 20,000 students to cancel their admissions for various reasons after seat allotment, taking the total vacant seats to 1.14 lakh. This is because some students are usually dissatisfied with the colleges in which seats are allotted to them.
“There is political uncertainty in AP over the bifurcation issue. All colleges in the Seemandhra region have been closed since August 1 due to bandhs and agitations.
There is also no clarity on the status of Hyderabad, thus affecting admissions even in Telangana. Half of the engineering colleges in the state are in and around Hyderabad. No one knows when normalcy will be restored.
All these factors have contributed to large scale exodus of students to other states,” said Ramesh Nimmatoori, the chairman of the Consortium of Engineering and Professional Colleges Managements Association of AP.
