Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi here on Monday said that influx from Bangladesh is no longer restricted to Assam alone but it was a global phenomenon.
Referring the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) report in which the UN, has pointed out the exodus of Bangladeshis, Mr Gogoi told reporters, “The UN report has revealed that in 2013, India was home to 3.2 million Bangladeshi residents who had migrated into the country. The report does not implies that all those migrants are in Assam alone.” Asserting that even other members of the UN are facing the burnt of influx from Bangladesh, Mr Gogoi said, “My government was sensitive to this problem of influx. Idea of my government to update the National Register of Citizenship was aimed at resolve this issue once for ever.”
Accusing his political opponents of doing politics in the name of identifying and deporting Bangladeshi migrants, Mr Gogoi accused them of not making any sincere efforts to check infiltration from Bangladesh.
He said that opposition was trying to mislead the people by referring the UN report, which has not published any state specific surveys on migration from Bangladesh.
He further pointed out that state has set up 36 tribunals where doubtful illegal migrants from Bangladesh are tried and once found to have entered the country after March 25, 1971, the person is declared as an illegal migrant and ordered to be deported.
With Bangladesh refusing to take back its citizens, the state government in 2010 set up detention camps in Goalpara, Kokrajhar and Silchar.
to put persons declared as illegal migrants by foreigners tribunals in detention till they are pushed back.
Mr Gogoi argued that Opposition was misrepresenting the facts published by the UN on influx from Bangladesh.
