Government promises action on Army report against Gen VK Singh

New Delhi: The UPA government on Friday said the report submitted by the Army requesting for a high-level independent probe into the functioning of a top secret intelligence unit set up by Gen V.K. Singh would be studied and an appropriate action would be taken.

Nobody would be spared, whether serving or retired officers, Information and Broadcasting minister Manish Tewari said at a press briefing here.
Minister for External Affairs Salman Khurshid said the report on Gen Singh was extremely worrisome.
However, senior retired Army generals said the Army has various checks and balances and Gen Singh could not have ordered setting up of any unit without the approval of the other wings of the government.
Gen Singh is suspected of carrying out 'unauthorised operations' and financial wrongdoings.
The Army report about the Technical Support Division, which was accused of illegally tapping phones of senior Defence Ministry officials, was submitted to the Defence Ministry in March this year, but came to public knowledge five days after Gen Singh was seen alongside BJP’s PM candidate Narendra Modi at a rally in Haryana.
Reacting to the reports, Gen VK Singh said, "This is simple vendetta as some people are not comfortable with me sharing the dais with Narendra Modi to espouse the cause of ex-servicemen in the country."
He said if anyone has recommended a probe into the functioning of the unit, then that person is "talking through his hat" as its operations were meant to be secret.
The BJP slammed the timing of the probe. BJP leader Balbir Punj termed the move as nothing but political vendetta by a nervous Congress government for having attended the Modi rally.
Punj said this is not an isolated case. The Congress is known for vendetta politics, he said, and cited the case if Haryana IAS officer Ashok Khemka who was being hounded for reopening the files relating to Robert Vadra, son-in-law of Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
Former IPS officer Kiran Bedi too questioned the timing of the probe.
