After the deadly May 25 attack on Congress leaders in Chhattisgarh, the CPI(Maoist) is all set to step up violence in the Naxal-infested state once again in the next 2-3 months, the Union home ministry will warn states at a high-level Naxal review meeting of LWE-affected states to be chaired by home minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Wednesday.
With the MHA calling for creation of specialised forces to counter the Naxal threat, Wednesday’s meet is expected to witness some plain-speaking by the MHA which will urge the Bihar government to ramp up its anti-Naxal operations and comply with the “conditions’’ put forth by it for raising the special forces.
The meeting will be attended by chief secretaries and DGPs of Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Orissa, West Bengal among others. With Assembly elections due in coming months, the MHA will ask states to adopt a “uniform’’ counter-insurgency strategy to keep Naxals at bay. The MHA will also warn that the Maoists will be at their “operational peak’’ in the next few months in Chhattisgarh spelling the urgency to increase vigil.
Top sources pointed out that Bihar faces a big threat from the rebels, with the maximum number of killings of security personnel taking place in the state over the last few months.
However, the Bihar government wants to use the specialised anti-Naxal forces for tackling crime in the state as well — a move rejected by the MHA. The MHA has also asked the Bihar government to give 50 per cent incentives to the special force which has been agreed by the other states.
“Bihar government is offering only 30 per cent incentive to the force which is not acceptable,” an official said.
