Lindsay Lohan’s 90 day stint in jail couldn’t have got more attention. While opinions are divided about the verdict, which is being called a tad too harsh for violating terms of her probation after being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, there are also voices that uphold the sentence saying any mockery of the American judicial system will not be tolerated.
However, closer home the shot seems differently angled. Although stars who cross the line of the law do garner attention, but all of it seems concentrated in the press and hardly reaches the court of the law. Be it the adorable bad boy Salman Khan, who is allegedly charged with drunken driving and killing one person and injuring three others. He was later let off due to lack of evidence. Or the doe eyed Fardeen Khan, who found himself on the wrong side of the law when cocaine was allegedly found in his possession a few years ago. He pleaded guilty and was let off on bail after applying for detoxification. Senior lawyer Ashok Aggarwal asserts the fact by saying that the justice system in the country is really skewed and tilts towards the rich. “The laws are soft towards the rich and hard towards the poor. A commoner would be given the harshest possible sentence for an offence, while a man with money would be treated with kindness. They always manage to find loopholes within laws,” he tells us.
As hero worship reaches new highs, stars in India have always been treated as demi-gods. Asha Bhonsle recently commented on Salman Khan’s tweet as he expressed his surprise over Lindsay’s 90-day sentence. “Salman Khan’s wondering why Lindsay Lohan got 90 days jail 4 drunk driving? These Americans don’t know how 2 treat their Stars(sic),” she had to later remove the tweet and apologise to the star’s fans, who flooded her with mails expressing their anger.
