New Delhi, Aug. 20: The Centre is expected to hold talks with Research in Motion (RIM) next week to scrutinise the technical solution being offered to Indian security agencies for access to its special services such as Blackberry Messenger (BBM) and Blackberry Enterprise Service (BES) .
Government sources have expressed concern over the BES for which the RIM has till now offered no commitment related to its legal interception by security agencies.
So far, the RIM has assured the home ministry of allowing manual interception of the BBM stating that direct or “real time” access can be only given by November this year.
The Centre has set August 31 as the deadline for RIM to offer a technical solution for legal access to its services or face a ban.
Citing the licencing conditions of telecom service providers, the sources said that service providers are liable to put in a mechanism allowing security agencies to intercept any conversation or message of any subscriber whenever required.
“If that is not done, we will take strict action. No mobile services, for which access is not give, will be allowed to continue,” an official said.
The official, however, maintained that a lenient view can be taken if the providers offer access in a phased manner which may cause some delay. “Few hours of delay in retrieving information can be acceptable,” an official said.
