I became a writer as I was bad at football, says Bond

I just write for the love of writing and don’t exactly keep the reader in mind while doing so,” says Ruskin Bond who was in Mumbai for a brief visit to launch his latest book. His books have created some of the most adorable and delightful memories about the monkeys or his endearingly appealing yet strict grandmother. One of the most sought after writers, Bond made his debut into the literary world at the age of 17.

“It wasn’t easy in the beginning to write novels and the thought settled comfortable much later,” says Bond. He also joked about how he was good at football and couldn’t really make an earning out of it so ended up writing. “I was good at English and it seemed natural for me to be a writer or play football. And at 76, I am happy that I chose the former,” laughs Bond.
He has probably represented the country in the most beautiful manner. He has described cites such as Dehra Dun, Mussorie and Deoli in such a manner that the reader develops an instant connection. Bond who is originally from the UK chose to stay back for the sheer love for the place and people here.
“I believe it is the people of any country that make the place interesting. I simply love being in the country and feel Indian at heart which is what matters the most,” he says. He feels that over the ages the marketing techniques have developed and along with technology it has made a huge difference to the literary world.
“In the ’60’s and the ’70’s there was hardly any scope for marketing and I feel that it is amazing that we have technology on our fingertips to promote literary work,” explains Bond. “It is an encouraging practice and I hope we have more and more writers coming our way,” says Bond.
Talking about his role in Vishal Bharadwaj’s film Saat Khoon Maaf, he says, “I don’t play Priyanka’s husband for sure and the tiny peck on her cheek that is hyped about is indeed very friendly one. She is fine actress and it was nice working with her,” says Bond.
