The opposition on Friday accused the government of failing to control the situation arising out of flood and drought in various parts of the country and demanded adequate compensation and relief to the affected states.
"The norms for providing compensation to people in flood affected areas are a big slap on the face of poor people," the BJP member, Mr Navojot Singh Sidhu, said in Lok Sabha while initiating the debate on floods and droughts in the country.
"The government gives compensation of Rs 1,600 per acre to flood victim. They pay them Rs 20 per head per day which is not sufficient to feed even their animals," he said.
Taking a dig at the Disaster Management Authority, he said it called a meeting to discuss the issue three days after the Chitra Ship oil spill happened.
He said, "The government should devise some mechanism to prevent and prepare itself to deal with natural calamities."
