In an unusual situation, judges of the Calcutta high court on Wednesday had to sit in the lounge as doors of the court rooms and their chambers were locked with employees going on an indefinite strike demanding pay hike.
Thousands of litigants are set to suffer as cases will not be heard till the indefinite strike called by the high court employees on Wednesday, continues.
There was no one to open locks of the court rooms and the judges' chambers as the employees did not report for duty in consonance with the strike call given by different unions, a high court official said.
The high court employees have been demanding immediate pay revision claiming that despite central and state government implementing pay commission recommendations, they are yet to get any pay hike.
A pay hike recommendation by an empowered committee of the Calcutta high court has been pending before the West Bengal government, which has sought time till September 30.
But the employees have gone ahead with the strike, high court officials said.
