The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) which is investigating almost everything related to Commonwealth Games — from display boards to installation of air-conditioners — has now asked the CPWD and the PWD of the Delhi government to provide details of all the materials used in foot overbridges at various Commonwealth Games sites and other Games-related sites.
The step has been taken by the commission after the foot overbridge connecting the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to the main parking lot in the area collapsed and the false ceiling tiles in the weightlifting arena fell off.
Sources in the commission confirmed that the civic agencies (CPWD and PWD) have been asked to give details of the material used in the construction at the Games sites they have been involved in. A senior CVC official pointed out, “the commission believes that there is a huge compromise in the construction of the Games sites.”
“Any structure will collapse only if the materials used in the construction are not of good standard,” the official added. The officials further added that the CVC is trying to find if the money sanctioned for construction was duly used for the purchase of materials.
In July, a CVC report had slammed various agencies of the Delhi government and levelled some serious charges of corruption. According to the report, the PWD had inflated cost for various projects to mislead authorities. An amount of `3.68 crores was wrongfully added to justify transportation costs, stated CVC officials in a report. An amount of `25.84 crores for labour was deemed “unjustified” by the CVC report.
