The CCTV footage recovered from the residence of two IIT students living close to the spot in Mauchi village in Dhaula Kuan where a girl from the Northeast was abducted and raped last week proved crucial for the cops to crack the case.
The police sources revealed that the swiftness with which the accused grabbed the girl while she was running for help and later dragged her into the pick-up van pointed towards the involvement of Mewati gangs as they are trained for catching livestock in such a manner. “The two students even tried to save the girl when she was abducted. They were watching it on CCTV when the incident happened. But by the time they got down from their residence, the accused had fled in their van,” a senior police official said.
Two of the five accused in the case are still on the run, “We have mounted surviellance on them. They will be nabbed soon,” the official said. Meanwhile, Patiala house court metropolitan magistrate Susheela Bala Dagar on Friday remanded the duo — Shamshad and Usman — accused of raping the 30-year-old call centre employee last week, to the high-security Tihar jail till Monday.
