Civil activists, including some representing the Northeast, on Friday met the chief minister Sheila to register their protest in the wake of gangrape of a woman BPO staffer in the Dhaula Kuan area recently.
Ms Dikshit has reportedly asked the civil activists to meet her on Saturday when representatives of the police would be present to hear their concerns. The activists reportedly told the chief minister that they have a list of concerns along with suggestions for the safety of women in the capital. They also complained that the police has not been proactive in ensuring safety of women in the capital and its response had been reactive. The civil activists are learnt to have told the chief minister that after incidents like gangrape of a BPO woman staffer, the police drop their guard. However, they welcomed the move of the police to check functioning of BPO cabs but sought that the checking of the call centre cabs should be put in the practice on a regular basis.
The civil activists also called upon the chief minister to publicise the mechanism in place for the women and their safety, including the helpline number run by the Delhi government and the police. They also complained that a dedicated helpline number of women from the Northeast is yet to be made operational despite a large number of people from the area facing harassment in the capital.
The activists also demanded that the accused arrested in the gangarape case of the woman BPO staffer be tried under the laws for the Scheduled Castes and Tribes to ensure that strict punishment is handed out to them. The delegation, which called on the chief minister, consisted of representatives of the North East Support Centre, Jagori, and the Northeast Network.
