The NDA on Tuesday said it was ready for a five-day special session of Parliament to compensate for the loss of work due to the current deadlock, provided the government concedes to the Opposition demand for JPC probe into the 2G spectrum issue.
NDA convenor and JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav said, “Let the government hold a special session of Parliament for five days after constituting the JPC. We are ready to sit till mid-night to complete the Parliament work.”
The NDA leaders met on Tuesday to discuss the issue. Sources said NDA leaders also discussed whether Public Accounts Committee (PAC) pursuing the 2G scam issue after the submission of CAG report on the issue, would dent Opposition’s campaign for a JPC probe or not. PAC is headed by senior BJP leader M.M. Joshi.
Sources said NDA leaders felt that PAC becoming active at this juncture could undermine the Opposition’s campaign for JPC. However, when asked Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj ruled out that PAC, headed by a BJP leader, pursuing the case, will have any effect on the JPC demand.
“First of all, a PAC chairman is above the party. Secondly, in the wake of recent developments (Niira Radia tapes), only a JPC would be able to probe effectively cover the wider issues and other dimensions,” said Ms Swaraj.
The NDA meeting also chalked out plans for a rally against corruption once the Parliament session is over. The prospective date for the rally was also discussed keeping in mind the forthcoming plenary session of Congress and Muharram.
