The city continued to reel under biting cold following which the power demand shot up beyond the 3,500 MW mark. Delhi urban development minister A.K. Walia inspected the night shelters in the city and said that all the shelter-dwellers would be put through medical check up to ensure that they are healthy. He also announced that `2 crores have been earmarked for upgradation of permanent night shelters.
Dr Walia said that he was coordinating with the health department and NGOs to ensure that chest X-ray of all homeless putting up in night shelters is conducted.
According to the weatherman, the maximum temperature in the city on Monday was recorded at 14.7º Celsius (six degrees below normal) and the minimum temperature was recorded at 8.2º Celsius (one degree above normal).
While there was shallow fog in the morning, the sun shone through as the day progressed. Although the wind speed on Monday was less than Sunday, the biting cold conditions pushed the peak power demand to 3,611 MW, largely due to heating appliances working over time to keep the environs warm both in houses and commercial centres.
The movement of trains was again hit due to fog, Gujjar agitation and snapping of railway track at Etawah on the Delhi-Howrah route. A large number of trains coming to and leaving Delhi from all directions were reported running late. Mist or shallow fog is likely during morning hours.

Ill-clad man dies of cold

Jan. 3: A labourer fell prey to the biting cold in the city on Monday. The deceased, whose identity has not been confirmed, was found lying near a pillar close to Akshardham Temple. A pedestrian saw the body and informed the police.
“The deceased was wearing a thin trouser and a torn shirt. He was taken to LBS Hospital where he was declared brought dead,” a senior police official said.
