The government may facilitate the release of incarcerated top leaders of Assam’s tribal insurgent groups National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) and Dima Halam Daogah (DHD) by not opposing their bail applications to pave way for peace dialogue following the recent release of Ulfa chairman Arbinda Rajkhowa on bail.
According to sources NDFB chief Ranjan Daimary and DHD leaders Jewel Garlosa and Niranjan Hojai may be out of judicial custody soon. The government is unlikely to oppose their bail applications when it comes up for hearing, sources added.
Sources further said, “Top Ulfa leaders, including Rajkhowa, have been released from jail recently after Assam government did not oppose their bail application apparently to facilitate their participation in peace dialogue.” Chief minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi has also said recently that the NDFB has sent a letter expressing its desire to take part in the peace negotiation, sources said adding that DHD leaders have also expressed their willingness to take part in the peace negotiation.
“Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), the coalition partner of Assam’s ruling Congress, has also requested Gogoi to do the needful for the release of jailed NDFB leaders to facilitate peace talks,” sources said.
Meanwhile, New Delhi has reportedly conveyed to Bangaldesh that it wants jailed Ulfa general secretary Anup Chetia’s extradition at the earliest. Chetia’s application for asylum has been rejected paving the way for his hassle-free hand-over. According to sources all formalities are being completed for the early extradition of Chetia.
