An encounter between the joint security forces and the Maoists began early on Thursday in West Midnapore's Jhargram area.
After a landmine blast in Agruiboni area on Wednesday, the forces launched a search operation against the ultras on Wednesday, the police said.
Early this morning, the forces were fired upon by the Maoists in Manikpara following which the gunfight ensued, they said.
So far, no report of any casualties or injuries have been received.
