Jan. 6: India have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate in the second innings of the third Test against South Africa at Newlands here on Thursday. Match referee Andy Pycroft imposed the fines on skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men after they were found three overs short when time allowances were taken into consideration. Dhoni was fined 60 percent of his match fee while his teammates were asked to shell out 30 percent of the match fee.
The ICC Code of Conduct regulations stipulates that players will be fined 10 percent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount.
India failed to complete the overs in time despite the fact that Harbhjan Singh bowled 38 overs in South Africa’s second batting essay. It’s been a long-running problem for Dhoni, and even during the first Test in Centurion, he had barely escaped censure.
Sree in the dock
Pacer Shanthakumaran Sreesanth was fined a further 10 per cent for kicking the boundary rope on Day Four of the third Test on Wednesday, after he had two leg before appeals turned down in the previous over.
The temperamental paceman incurred the individual fine after pleading guilty to a charge that related to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings”, the ICC said in a statement. Sreesanth later apologised for the incident.
