Visakhapatnam: Ten fishermen were killed and 12 others injured after a van in which they were travelling rammed into a stationary lorry near Payakaraopeta here in the wee hours this morning, police said.
The incident occurred when the driver of the over-speeding van lost control over the vehicle and dashed into the stationary lorry from rear side on NH-5 at around 0400 hours, Narsipatnam DSP N Narasimha Kishore said.
Police suspect that the mishap occurred due to fog.
Eight persons were killed on the spot and two others died while undergoing treatment at a hospital. The condition of two among the 12, who received injuries, was critical, another police officer said.
The van loaded with fish was carrying about 22 fishermen, who after purchasing the stock were on their way to Mandapeta in Visakhapatnam district to sell it, he said.
